What About Bob?

"Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste, I've been around for a long, long year, Stole many a man's soul and faith..."

Truer words are rarely spoken or, in this case, beautifully designed. Compliments to designer CJ Wallis. There is nothing this man can't do.

Jen Soska has now reached her limit of 5,000 facebook friends. However, Bob Soska is more than happy to accept your friend request. After all, 5,000 is a good start for an army, but 10,000 has a really nice ring to it...

Come join the Twisted Twins Army and let's be friends. Each and every single one of you.

Friend Bob here.

Bloody Best!

D'Ment'D Cinema's Steve Mezo Interviews the Twisted Twins

I am proud to be Canadian. No doubt about it. I am equally proud of my Hungarian roots. The Soska tribe does, in fact, spawn from the land of Bela Lugosi, Nokedli, Dracula, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Stuffed Peppers, Gene Simmons, Ghoulash, and Elisabeth Bathory.

If you haven't had Nokedli (Hungarian Dumplings also called SpƤtzle) with Paprika chicken, go get yourself a Hungarian girlfriend or boyfriend and prepare to propose. It is by far the most delicious pairing available on this planet.

We've always felt a profound connection with fellow Hungarians. It's like when we discover someone has a twin. It's like finding out you're both in the same top secret, exclusive club. Such was the case when we met the wonderful Steve Mezo of D'Ment'D Cinema this year. Admittedly, we liked the guy before he revealed that we had the homeland in common. That little reveal just made us all the more happy to have a met not only a phenomenal writer that has horror in common with us, but our also all things Hungarian.

We had the distinct pleasure of chatting with Steve and what came of it was the funnest interview we've ever had. We weren't asked a single question we've been asked before. And the questions we were asked made us giggle like school girls in line for the latest Twilight POS.

We covered all essential food groups. Badass (and fine ass) X-man, Wolverine, and just how wicked awesome is that good ole' Stan The Man made him a Canadian.

She-Rah, Catra, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the characters we'd play as when we were little.

All the good stuff. TRAILER PARK BOYS, 3D Smut films, Zombie Apocalypses, and much more. It's a purrfect opportunity to get to know us a whole lot better and quite a revealing look at our personalities. It was a real pleasure.

Get the FULL AWESOME INTERVIEW right here!

And if you're not familiar with D'Ment'D Cinema, naughty, naughty, you. But we've got you covered. Catch up here and drink up the radstorm.

And, for Pete's sake, go get yourself some sweet ass Nokedli. Just look at that thing of unparalleled beauty.

Jen

Good Day, Hooker!

You know, Robert Rodriguez has a lot to answer for. His Grindhouse films Planet Terror and Machete have inspired a new generation of independent film-makers wanting to turn their own twisted ideas into full-fledged features. Take Canadian director Jason Eisener for example. His Hobo With A Shotgun (didn’t the Daily Mail just love it?) is a carefully crafted homage to the action exploitation genre and boasts a standout performance from the one and only Rutger Hauer.

Then’s there’s the Soska sisters. Armed with their film-making bible, Rodriguez’s Rebel Without a Crew, the twins maxed out their credit cards to fund their own Grindhouse-inspired vision – Dead Hooker in a A Trunk.

-Pete's Peek

This is an excerpt from a fantastic article from Pete's Peek talking about tonight's DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK television premiere screening in the UK. Click here for the entire lovely article and tune in tonight to see this indie flick hit the small screen for the first time! Here is a little more motivation from Peter of Pete's Peek on Movie Talk --

Intentionally ridiculous, Dead Hooker is bloody good fun – but you have to suspend your belief from the outset. So don’t expect any logic – just sit back and enjoy one Hell of a ride.

The biggest, craziest, most humble, thank you to you reading this blog, you who heard about this flick and shared it with your friends, you who reviewed it, you who took the time to chat with us, you who become our dearest friends, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You made this possible with your support and by demanding that it be seen. Please tune in tonight!

This is the continuation of the big release. As promised, HOOKERS for everyone!

We Love Horror Happy Hour

I am a definite nerd and one of my favorite phrases, in fact MANY of my favorite phrases, comes from LOTR. "It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to." And it's proven true more often than not. When we wake up in the morning, we never know where life will take us next, but I imagine that's half the fun.

This morning, something wonderful happened. We were treated to something fan~fucking~tastic and have found something new, kick ass, hilarious, brilliant, entertaining, and in all ways wicked awesome. I'm talking about HORROR HAPPY HOUR. And what is HHH? Well, it ain't just a platinum, bad boy wrestler...

HORROR HAPPY HORROR is a new love of ours. It's hosted by two of the coolest people I've ever laid eyes on who have a gore~geous, straight forward, no bullshit approach of reviewing horror, Dave and Krys Caroleo. And to make their show even more wicked awesome is that it is in fact happy hour during the review and the shots are flowing. Definitely our kind of people.

I want to quote the review. I'd actually like to quote the entire thing in one big run-on sentence of untold radness, but in a world of numerous written reviews, it's watching these two that is the best part of it all. I believe we were only a few minute sin when we turned to each other and said, "we have to visit these two when we come to New York." And we intend to.

Now, our deranged first born feature is on its way to the world as we speak or rather type. On July 29th, just a couple days away, DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK will have its television premiere on the UK HORROR CHANNEL. And then at long last it's time to bring our DEAD HOOKER to North America, courtesy of IFC Midnight, who are releasing the film in limited lucky theaters during special midnight screenings across the USA and Canada. You want it in your town? Demand it. And if you're damn tired of waiting, well, shucks, you don't even have to. IFC Midnight is giving the world a taste of DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK AUGUST 3rd when they're putting our girl on VOD. Yes, August 3rd is DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK Day. Tell your friends.

Want to know the ride that's waiting for you? Check out Dave and Krys' outstanding HORROR HAPPY HOUR review of DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK below. It's fucking awesome.

I'm off to check out their review of INSIDE. Sylvie and I have always been divided on that one, ha ha.

A very special thank you to Dave and Krys. You've made our days. Check out their site RIGHT HERE. Subscribe to their channel and give yourself the gift of something kick ass to look forward to. We already have.

And for an added bonus, check out the lovely Krys in her killer Punisher costume. Sylv is a huge fan of mister Castle and his body of work and I have a feeling this shot means the lot of us will get along famously.

Bloody Best!

"Nearly every actor and actress who appeared on screen in DHiaT also served the film in other areas, from camera operators and stunt coordinators to editors and cinematographers. This film is a work of art, and it's a labor of love. Love from fans of horror, and of film in general, who took that love and put it to work, creating a film of their own. And the love and respect that these men and women have for the the genre, as well as for movies as a whole, is very evident throughout the entire film. The Sweetest Thing

It's a pleasure just to be nominated, but it's DAMN sweet to win. We have been given the distinct privilege of having our PENNY DREADFUL DIARY honored with the Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award.

Two fold. We were announced by the wonderful and talented Sean Thompson, of Spooky Sean's Sinful Bloggery, and the oh-so-lovely Jennifer Cooper, of Jennifer's Bodies Film Festival and Musings Of A Morleysaurus.

Thank you so much, my dear friends. It's makes us so happy to, in addition to all that film business, to be able to maintain our personal blog which ranges from covering our latest film ventures to our own personal stories and everywhere in between. Thank you for reading. It's an amazing feeling to be able to personally connect with so many people.

There are rules that go along with this award...

1) Thank and link to the person who nominated you.
2) Share 7 random facts about yourself.
3) Pass the award to 12 of your blogging buddies.
4) Notify the recipients

Now I hope I am allowed to include those who have nominated me because it would be impossible to carry on with out doing so. So I shall. It's my blog, after all. My rules.

*insert maniacal laughter here*

SEVEN RANDOM FACTS ABOUT OURSELVES

1) Sylv's favorite Ghostbuster is Dr. Peter Venkman. Mine is Dr. Egon Spengler. *sigh* Oh, Egon...

2) We're Hungarian. Though we've never returned to the "homeland", our first language was Hungarian. We didn't speak much English until we had to attend school. We learned English by watching TV.

3) We used to volunteer as camp counselors at a children's horse camp. We're very good riders and used to teach kids how to ride. We haven't been riding in far too long.

4) We still have and love our favorite childhood toys. Sylv has a stuffed lion in a plain white T named "Tigey" and I have my Roger Rabbit.

5) We know every word and every lyric in Little Shop of Horrors and tried in vain on many an occasion to put it on as a school play. No one shared our enthusiasm. The fools. We had a cat named "Seymour" after Krelborn.

6) We're both brow belts in mixed martial arts.

7) We both think monkeys are Godless, violent, little bastards and would never go near one that is free range.

And the 12 Winners as chosen by us Twisted Twins (in no particular order)...

1) MARGARET BIRD: The blog of the third member of our Triforce. Talented film maker, masterful musician and composer, and BFF, CJ Wallis. I could write volumes about this man's un-ending, awesome-y, awesome-ness, but I can imagine you get my drift. He's outstanding and his work, thoughts, inspirations, aspirations, and upcoming projects are all here.

2) CIGARETTES AND REDVINES: The definitive P.T. Anderson resource and a site that CJ Wallis has been looking after for years and years. I know you love this cinematic genius and perhaps this is a site that you have previously been unaware of. Look no further. For the latest, breaking news on all things P.T., look no further. And you're welcome.

3) THE JADED VIEWER: If you take a read of the site you'll quickly learn the Jaded Viewer reviews the world of horror, splatter, gore, cult, grindhouse, trash, b-movie, erotica, indie, asian and exploitation films. But what gives him a very special place in our demented little hearts is that he was the first blogger ever to review anything to do with our DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK. In fact, he reviewed and posted our very first trailer. We've loved him ever since.

4) LICK MY LIT: Yes, you did read that right. Provocative, brilliant, informed, and opinionated is our honorary third sister, Hannah Neurotica, of Ax Wound Zine and founder of Women In Horror month. Hannah is a talented writer, reviewer, interviewer, and all round artist. I am grateful everyday that she has come into our lives. Now you can welcome her and her blog into yours.

5) SPOOKY SEAN'S SINFUL BLOGGERY: Of course I must include the incredibly talented Sean Thompson, of his Sinful Bloggery. He is an outstanding writer and I am so happy to be able to also call him our friend. Please do treat yourselves to a read of his work. His stories are wonderful and the world is just that much better now that they're being published. Certainly a man to keep an eye on and both if you can spare them.

6) MUSINGS OF A MORLEYSAURUS: Truly a woman after my own heart. Jennifer Cooper is a horror nerd but as we all know nothing is more chic than geek. It's our time. Her blog is a personal favorite of ours and chalk full of keen wit, delicious turn of phrase, and the latest on horror and geek culture. A definite book mark blog for all.

7) THE BLOOD SPRAYER: Okay, it's not just a blog, but a full awesome ass site of reviews, interviews, news, and collective radity. I love the whole lot of the Blood Sprayer crew. They are masters of horror and know their shit. A special shout out goes to our outstanding friends who have been so good to us at the Blood Sprayer: Zach Shildwachter, Kristy Jett, Wes Allen, James Cortez, Shawn Savage, and Ted Brown. Now go to the site and enjoy a steaming cup of boom storm in your faces (I ensure you it's a good thing).

8) ZOMBIES DON'T RUN: Chuck Conry is wicked. From the moment we read his blog name we were in agreement. REAL zombies don't run and Chuck is the man. He's one of our beloved Horrorphilia gents, too. We love his writing style and his blog is a must stop shop for all things horror.

9) SLAMMED & DAMNED: The official blog of sensational writer Theron Neel. He was one of the very first to take a chance on and review our DEAD HOOKER. He is an astounding writer, reviewer, and interviewer. He also writes for FanGirlTastic. And he's fan~fucking~tastic himself. Any horror lover should certainly take a looky loo and enjoy.

10) FROM MIDNIGHT, WITH LOVE: Written and maintained by "The Mike". An absolutely phenomenal blog that was recently nominated for the 2010 "Best Blog" Rondo. Yes, there is a definite and indeed deliberate "horror" theme amongst these blogs, but the horror community is made up of some of the greatest people there are. We're avid readers of FMWL.

11) THE LIBERAL DEAD: The Liberal Dead is an independent horror entertainment site, ran by fans, for fans. Justin LaLiberty, Shawn Savage, and Ted Brown are horror fans and that's what makes them so damn good at what they do. They love horror and we love them right back.

12) THE ALBIN WAY: Andrea Albin is one badass bitch. She writes for the delicious STIFF Magazine, reviews, and interviews. We've met only recently but we've fallen for this talented femme fatale and her gore~geous way with words. Recently she spoke with us and the always wonderful Eli Roth. You can check that out right here.

Now I KNOW I haven't included everyone I adore. 12 is a lot, but just not enough in this case. Forgive me if you're not in this list, you're still on my "heart" list and that's not too shabby.

In closing, thank you for this distinct honor and I hope all you readers have seen a few new cool blogs to check out.

X's and O's,
Jen

Being Buffy The Vampire Slayer Ain't Easy

Hello, boys and grrls.

My name is Jen Soska and I'm a Buffy die hard.

Now, this is not new information to any of you and last February I had the esteemed pleasure of writing about Buffy during our 28 inspirational Women In Horror articles. She was the only fictional character to be included and with good reason. She is a huge inspiration to me and a big part of who I am today.

How is it possible that a simple character motivated me to become the that woman I am today?

Oh, I'm glad you asked.

I've always been a slight little thing. I grew up loving comics and video games with these big glasses, total lack of fashion sense, and unabashed thirst for knowledge. I was picked on and dubbed a nerd. No one ever thought much of me being able to do anything physical, but I dreamed of being strong like the heroines I idolized from Marvel and DC. When I was in highschool, something magical happened. A young girl from California moved to Sunnydale and began to attend Sunnydale high. When the tv series started, Buffy Summers was just one year ahead of me.

I had heard of the show and heard it was awesome, but didn't think much of it. One day, I was channel surfing and found HUSH, the break through, Emmy nominated episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This episode was a mile stone in the series and became a mile stone in my life.

Buffy Summers didn't look all that tough. She was slight and even came across a tad naive at times. But beneath those blond locks, pristine make up, and stylish yet affordable boots, was great strength. Joss Whedon had taken a character type that was previously only seen in the victim role in horror movies. We'd all seen plenty of the pretty, unsuspecting blond that gets chased and ultimately killed by the big bad monsters. Joss threw out that tired stereotype and turned it on its head. Now the unsuspecting blond was the one that monsters were running from.

And I loved it.

"I'm the thing that monsters have nightmares about. And right now, you and me are gonna show 'em why." ~Buffy Summers

I wanted to be Buffy and it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that I still want to be her. I began collecting and privately training with weapons. I wanted to be strong and no one would teach me. I've kept it up over the years and now have over 100 weapons in my collection. And, yes, I do have several stakes. I studied martial arts and with much focus, dedication, and discipline changed my physique to be a fighter.

But anyone can tell you that Buffy is much more than a physical fighter. Joss Whedon is known for his incredible story lines that beautifully and patiently build over seasons and then pay off in a masterful way. Ask any Buffy fan and they will tell you the episodes that they turn to again and again. Not only was Buffy around my age and size, but she didn't have a cake walk in life. Being the Slayer is hard and it's something we can all relate to because life itself is damn hard. Things change that are beyond our power and we have to be able to face those hardships and deal. That was an invaluable lesson. This quote gets me through some hard days...

"Bottom line is, even if you see 'em coming, you're not ready for the big moments. No one asks for their life to change, not really. But it does. So what are we, helpless? Puppets? No. The big moments are gonna come. You can't help that. It's what you do afterwards that counts. That's when you find out who you are."
~ Whistler, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 2, Becoming Part 1

That's something huge I admired about the series and the character. It wasn't really a "monster" show. It was a deep and moving drama that had moments of pure whimsical comedy that could change in a second to move you from laughing to holding back tears. She lived a very human life throughout. Sure, she killed demons and slayed vampires, but she had bills to pay, a job, school, and all that life stuff to fight through as well. She had to make hard decisions and had to believe in herself even when no one else stood by her. It's a vital part of becoming an adult. Buffy never had it easy. The path of the hero never is.

Buffy had her share of losses and always kept going. She lost friends, she lost her true love, she lost her job, she lost her mother, she lost her ability to ever have a normal life, she lost her dignity, she lost her way, she lost her strength, but she would time and time again rise up against those challenges and become stronger than ever before.

She was human and sometimes, she fucked up. Sometimes royally.

And sometimes she sacrificed everything she had for the greater good without question.

At my low moments, I always grab my coveted Buffy The Vampire Slayer Chosen Collection, a must have item for any die hard, and pick an appropriate episode.

If I'm feeling lost, I watch The Freshman and watch Buffy find herself again after she loses her way.

When I'm thinking about life and death, I watch the Body and try to come to terms with how death is inevitable and how you never really are prepared for it when it happens. It makes me want to live every day I've got to its fullest.

When I'm mad as hell and want revenge, I watch Seeing Red through to Grave and see my beloved Willow finally have enough of keeping herself in line and raise some hell. And, in the end, do the right thing and try to piece herself back together after her world comes crashing down around her.

Each and every character grows and changes through the series and becomes a new version of themselves. It's something we all do. Buffy come season 7 isn't the girl we met in the series opener WELCOME TO THE HELLMOUTH. Sweet, awkward, and insecure Willow Rosenberg has a beautiful character arc. We get to watch her grow into a strong, confident woman before our eyes, one that hardly resembles the Willow we were first introduced to.

Buffy makes me happy. Everyone needs their own "Buffy", something to turn to when we're feeling defeated and lost that gives us strength and tells us we can face any demon that comes our way. I'm grateful to have her.

And any die hards wanna talk Buffy to me, please, be my guest. I could probably write forever on her, but, for now, I'll shut up.

But only for now...

XO,
Jen
